Rooted in intimacy, vulnerability and spontaneous movement, Gemma’s practice explores what it means to be touched by art and to touch back in return, emotionally and physically. Boundaries between viewer and artwork are blurred, giving way to encounters that are felt rather than merely observed. Materiality plays a pivotal role - surfaces, textures and forms chosen not only for how they look, but for how they might be experienced and held, imagined, remembered.
Often using found and discarded objects Gemma endeavours to turn the overlooked into something unexpectedly moving. By gathering fragments of everyday life her artworks can feel charged with memory, with each object carrying its own quiet history. Assembled together, emotional landscapes are formed that speak to loss, resilience, and the beauty hidden in what others throw away.
PbTbtA ultimately asks a simple question: what happens when we allow ourselves to be moved? In a world that encourages detachment and speed, Gemma insists on slowness, care and sensation. An invitation and a gentle provocation, the work asks the viewer to move closer – emotionally, sensorially, bodily – and to acknowledge that art is not meant to be a sealed object but a living exchange.
